Something for My Hallmates To Think About
or #10 on My Christmas Wish List
[For those of you who don't live in my hall here at Marian, I've been keeping a day-by-day "Christmas list" of mostly absurd or comical things I'd like to find under the tree. Today, however, I took the opportunity to use the list to ask for something serious - Hallmates who understand and live by the Franciscan value 'Dignity of the Individual.' Since I didn't have enough room on the whiteboard, I've listed the URL of this site on the whiteboard and asked anyone who is curious to read this post. So here we go.]
The other day, I was eating lunch in the cafeteria on the side where the really active Catholics typically sit (I don't know how else to describe that side, but anyone who goes here knows the area I'm referring to). I hadn't brought anything to read with me, so I was actually tuned in to what was going on around me for a change. And to be honest, what was going on almost made me stand up and give this little tirade right then and there. Throwing food, guys? Come on. Aside from being just plain immature, I fail to see how you are showing respect for the dignity of the individuals who work for Aramark. Maybe you're going to tell me that cleaning up after us is there job. Alright, I won't disagree with that to a point. It's one thing if a fry falls on the floor, or if somebody spills a glass of pop. They're both mistakes, and THAT is what Aramark is there to clean up. Would you say that they should wipe your asses when you are done with the food you DID eat? Then why would you say that they are in change of cleaning up the food that, for whatever reason, you decided to reject and throw on the floor?
But I held it back. I thought maybe it was just a wild day of mistakes that compounded on each other. They happen - I know. But twice now, twice within the past week, someone (or more than one someone) has decided it would be cute to mark up the damaged area of my whiteboard. No, it's not a big spot. But it is something which I'm now stuck with as long as I use that board. Why? I know you didn't laugh as you walked away, because I heard you standing outside my door. So if it wasn't funny, why did you do it? I'm afraid I don't see the respect being shown towards me there, either.
While I am not on the seminarian track, I still greatly respected the gentlemen who joined this hall to create the Foundation Wing. And while I'm not an active Catholic myself, I can't think of a nobler set of values upon which you could base your studies and then take those studies out into the world. Are you not still taught to ask yourselves what Jesus would do in any given situation?
I expected better. I get the feeling that He would have, too.
